Lung Transplant Program
The physicians of the Northwestern Medicine Lung Transplant Program combine leading clinical practice with groundbreaking research in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of severe lung disease.

With an active clinical trial program bringing new treatments and procedures to light, our pulmonary physicians and surgeons offer experience, innovation, and expertise in the treatment of complex lung disease.

Combining leading research and clinical expertise with a thorough diagnostic evaluation, the Northwestern team is able to offer the best possible range of medical, interventional and surgical treatments for patients. Lung transplantation consistently restores quality of life in recipients and has been shown to prolong life among patients with end-stage lung disease: 50 percent of patients live another five years, 20 percent another 10 years.

Open communication and cooperation with referring physicians is a critical component of achieving high-quality care and minimizing the challenges that come with treating complex lung disorders. Designed to provide survival extension in patients with lung disease, the program is led by a select group of experts in lung transplantation in the U.S.

The multidisciplinary team of lung transplant physicians are experienced in all manners of advanced lung disease, including:
  • Adult cystic fibrosis
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Primary and Secondary pulmonary hypertension
  • Alpha 1 anti-trypsin deficiency
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Histiocytosis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Sarcoidosis

The Northwestern Lung Transplant Program works closely with multidisciplinary teams of physician specialists to provide exceptional care along the entire spectrum of life-threatening lung diseases. In addition to assessing patients for transplantation, our comprehensive evaluations focus on medical optimization, symptom management, pulmonary rehabilitation and candidacy for alternative interventions or investigational trials.

Evaluations include diagnostic testing and consultations with:
  • Transplant surgeons
  • Pulmonologists
  • Transplant coordinators
  • Psychologists
  • Social workers
  • Financial coordinators
  • Nutritionists
  • Other specialists, as needed

The Northwestern Lung Transplantation Program currently provides these services:
  • Lung volume reduction surgery
  • Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)

Looking toward the future, other innovations are in development:
  • Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP)
  • Genomic studies and immunosuppression research

The Kovler Organ Transplantation Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been providing transplantation services since 1964 and is a leader in research, innovation and patient care in the Midwest region. Our surgeons transplant more than 400 organs each year, making the Northwestern Memorial program among the top nationally in patient outcomes and the number of transplants performed.
